The University of Miskolc this year celebrated the 290th anniversary of Selmecbánya’s mining and forestry education—the intellectual and cultural foundation of our institution. The commemorative event brought together university leaders, distinguished researchers, industrial partners, and representatives of the broader Selmec community to honour the enduring legacy that continues to shape the spirit and professionalism of our university.
The anniversary programme included a series of commemorative speeches, reflections on the Selmec heritage, and music performed by current students and alumni. The gathering not only celebrated the past but also emphasised the living traditions that connect the Selmec spirit with today’s academic and professional life.

Strengthening Industry Partnerships within the CIRCLETECH Project
The event also served as an important moment for strengthening industry partnerships related to the CIRCLETECH project. Several faculty leaders, senior and early-career researchers, as well as executives and experts from industrial companies collaborating with the University of Miskolc attended the commemoration.
Their presence underscored the role of traditions not only in community building, but also in fostering long-term professional cooperation and innovation-driven research collaboration.
Selmec Student Songs and a Unique CIRCLETECH Connection
A memorable part of the ceremony was the performance of traditional Selmec student songs (diáknóták), which once again demonstrated the cultural richness of this centuries-old community.

It is worth highlighting here that the intro of the CiRCLETECH Podcast was inspired by this very tradition. The intro music is based on a classic Selmec student song, arranged for guitar and performed by Prof. Dr. József Faitli, CiRCLETECH research group leader — who, besides being a respected researcher, is also an accomplished guitarist. This creative reinterpretation beautifully illustrates how Selmec heritage continues to inspire modern initiatives.

Legacy and Future
The Selmec–Miskolc 290 celebration reaffirmed that tradition and innovation are not opposites but mutually reinforcing forces. The University of Miskolc remains committed to preserving the values inherited from Selmecbánya while promoting forward-looking educational, research, and industrial collaboration activities.
